I hate how most people my age accept as common knowledge that the world is overpopulated. I used to think so as well based on what I’d always been taught in grade school.

The world's population is expected to peak around 2100 if I'm not mistaken. Indeed, increasing numbers of countries are experiencing population loss from negative birth rates (post-industrial, advanced societies that have completed the demographic transition, etc.)

... and if there *are* too many people per planet, then surely the way to lower that ratio is by increasing the denominator, rather than lowering the numerator.

People in the west are having too few children, in other places they are arguably having too many, which is why we have borders. We just need to get off fossil fuels, learn to eat less beef and we can sustain many more people, and we have the tech to turn desert into farmland.

Does "too many" conflate many issues? The more familiar Malthusian k-curve / carrying capacity issue. And the related but less familiar - how primates function at scale? So going past a certain number (grouped by social org) integrated functions & sustainable distribution crack?
