Don't want people getting into politics for money either way, whether it be lobbyists and bribes or ridiculously high taxpayer-funded salaries.
Congresspeople make $174k/year plus benefits. Which is a lot in most of the country, but doesn't go very far in DC. Agree with your point -- the better we pay politicians, the less beholden they are to lobbyists & bribery.

I have my doubts about the ability to pay a salary that materially competes with corruption.
