Another reality check: @RichardDawkins has the same number of Twitter followers (2.8 million) as @JeffreeStar, whose Youtube makeup tutorials get at least 2 million views within a week of release.

Reality check for first-time authors:
1) if your book does well (but not a bestseller), maybe 10k people will buy it, and 3k finish it.
2) if you're on a popular podcast (like @joerogan or @RubinReport), at least 100k people will hear your ideas.

Isn’t it often the having written a book that gets you invited on those shows?

It helps, but there might be more time-effective ways to build public platform than spending 1-2 years writing a book and 6 months promoting it.

I’ve made the switch to audio books- I’m not sure if it’s intellectually lazy, but I find I enjoy listening over physically reading. Maybe I’m a product of the age of technology and communication?
