Voting for a candidate who can not win is a waste of a vote. That's what the major parties would like you to believe. It would be true, but for the fact that elections are itterated games. The truth is: it is often the most powerful move--the opposite of staying home.

This is also why the two major parties stress each election that this is "the most important election of our lifetimes". They don't want you to play the long-term game

There is historical precedent with this as well. Third parties called for a manumission of slaves and direct election of senators,

Direct election of senators has been a net negative for the country, but ending slavery was good

Eh. They won’t take that 5% if it would lose them 10% of the middle. And we both know that the Left’s agenda is incompatible with Libertarianism. All you are doing is splitting conservative votes.... I have been seeing Libertarian candidate ads...paid for Democrat party.

Theoretically sound, but politics is a graveyard of theoretically sound ideas presided over by emotionally satisfying self-harm. “We just need the base to turn out!” becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy which allows votes lost to be regarded as traitors rather than opportunities.

Even here in New York I voted Libertarian, where possible on the local level. I was going to skip voting on the national main party candidates, but while waiting in line I figured I best rebuke Trump’s strain of assholism and vote Dem for the first time.

Most libertarians are open borders. I'd rather not send that message to the 2 parties

Writing in Harambe serves the same purpose. And curiously, it catches you a lot less flack from the Reds and the Blues at cocktail parties if they find out who you voted for. If some psychologist could explain that to me, I'd appreciate it.
