I intuitively like EA's long-term future focus. Is it a valid counter-argument that those future generations aren't (yet) sentient - hence aren't capable of suffering / flourishing - therefore don't warrant moral consideration?
Some folks argue that, but I think it's incoherent. Hypothetical future lives will be REAL lives if we bring them into existence. Just as real as us. Why wouldn't they warrant moral consideration? Shouldn't we be grateful to our ancestors that they succeeded in creating us?

I'm definitely grateful :). It's just the conditionality (if, would) that gives me pause for thought. Generally - acting to prioritise future generations helps current generations too - so often not in conflict.

To act is a way to serve your future self is selfish. Acting morally in the present is acting morally for the future. Plenty of claims for the need to self sacrifice for the future in immoral ways.
