Remember the future

I intuitively like EA's long-term future focus. Is it a valid counter-argument that those future generations aren't (yet) sentient - hence aren't capable of suffering / flourishing - therefore don't warrant moral consideration?
-
Some folks argue that, but I think it's incoherent. Hypothetical future lives will be REAL lives if we bring them into existence. Just as real as us. Why wouldn't they warrant moral consideration? Shouldn't we be grateful to our ancestors that they succeeded in creating us?

True, but we also discount the future because of possible risks. I bet that at any reasonable discount rate, those quadrillions matter less than the billions alive today.

And yet, the more risks we avoid effectively, the less we have to discount the future...
