Most humans like eating meat. But how can we do that without imposing factory-farming suffering on billions of sentient animals every year? My pal @jacyreese has a great new book out today on how new technology & new ethics can overcome this dilemma. We can solve this.https://twitter.com/jacyanthis/status/1059855933424222209 …

Wow! So many book sales today that Amazon temporarily ran out of stock. (Fortunately it just means a 1-2 day delay in shipping.) It's still on sale at a 35% discount, so order your copy now. #EffectiveAltruism #Tech #Vegan #NewBook #Books https://amazon.com/End-Animal-Farming-Entrepreneurs-Animal-Free/dp/0807019453/ …

BTW The wrong compromise is to switch from red meat to eating more chicken and fish. If you stop eating chicken, and eat MORE beef, that hugely reduces total animal suffering.https://www.vox.com/2015/7/31/9067651/eggs-chicken-effective-altruism …

Would it really be better for cows if people didn't eat meat? Certainly the number of cows alive would decline by several orders of magnitude.

Personally, I think a case can be made that pastured cows have net positive lives, and that eating beef is ethically OK. Some folks disagree, but I think beef is generally the least unethical meat.

The easiest solution would be to return to what we did before factory farming animals. But that won't win any votes.

That would only be possible if people drastically reduced their meat consumption. There is not nearly enough land for animals to graze to meet current demand.

This seems a slightly loose translation of the word “sentient.”

'Sentient' means capable of suffering. 'Sapient' means intelligent.

I dont mind anyone making any personal choice on ones diet, I object being forced to do it, luckily I raise some of my meat requirements , and I buy sustainable non factory local "heritage" breeds of both beef and pigs ... yet even then the EU wants to destroy that in my country

Congressman @RepThomasMassie is sponsoring PRIME Act which would allow in-state sales of home-raised meat without first going thru USDA facility. Gov regulation virtually guarantees our meat must be passed through factory farms and slaughterhouses. https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/article211155859.html …

It's not just that most people "like" to eat meat. We *have* to eat meat.
