Is there a general term for the belief that people are basically good? (request: actual answers not obvious jokes about how that sort of viewpoint is naive!)

In practice modern movement-libertarianism operates on the principle that people are inherently bad & need to be restrained by threat of deadly force.

Well modern right-leaning contains the same less-than-sympathetic principle of other right-ideologies: People with no money are lazy and deserve what they get.

Right. As a Libertarian, I believe in the right to bear arms so that I can protect myself from other good people. I fully expect to be quoted out of context with this tweet. Make my day.

Most practitioners I've seen are quite the cynical opposite, more in the mold of Ayn Rand.

Libertarians have good ideas, but pure libertarians are naive imo. Just as we can't run a society based on collectivization and socialism, it's equally mad to assume we can run one off selfishness and individualism. Assuming people are good is humanism, we aren't.
