Here’s a puzzle I think about a lot. If any academic field is associated with the contemporary debate surrounding free speech, it’s psychology. Haidt, Pinker, Peterson, Saad, Jussim, even Lehmann. All specialize or have backgrounds in academic psych. So what’s the puzzle?

If anything, dismissing free speech as an elitist enterprise would be the most obvious display of noxious elitist attitudes. I'm not particularly sanguine about prospects of "converting" those who don't want free speech--but we'd be remiss to not try for the others.

Whilst I'm no psychologist, in principle we should at least aim for open discourse and debate, because we have more than sufficient historical precedent to demonstrate the alternative.

European governments and social media companies which increasingly curtail free speech.

Tenured, or not, academics; anyone who considers themselves an “authority” b/c of publication? Another example of “elitists?” Maybe? They curtail free-speech too when it doesn’t fit their agenda or ideology.
