PS I ask this as someone who watches way too much @inkmaster and fully appreciates that expert tattoo art can be skillful, creative, & amazing.

I don't really think that's the point of tattooing
-
As an 'Ink Master' watcher, I understand it's not all about aesthetics, but I'm interested in the aesthetic question.
-
Cant answer that because I have 2 sleeves and it has nothing to do with it. Just my take

By surface area, individual tattoo, or whole person?

I was thinking per individual tattoo.

Tattoos are tyranny of the present self over the future self. They solidify identity making personal growth more difficult. It's why people with tattoos have earlier mortality and why people with extreme numbers of tattoos have higher suicide rates.
-
I can see this being accurate, any citations?

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24926092 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10837885 Here's some small studies on tattoos and mortality/suicide. I think the default explanation of "people with tattoos engage in riskier behavior/ drugs/alcohol" misses the point...

Yes tattoos can be a marker of some type of disorder (substance abuse, personality disorder, etc.) but they can also contribute to the formation of one and be a preventative barrier in treating it.
-
I can see this.

I volunteer at a nursing home. No tats on any patients and they listen to Sinatra, Nat King Cole, etc. Kind of depressing to realize future nursing homes will be full of old women with stripper tats above their diapers, listening to hip hop.

90% of tattoos look like future regret to me. Also there is a milieu to tats, so it seems like a way of tribal signaling, I'm not a joiner.

Tattoos on women have always turned me off. Why would you desecrate something that's already beautiful? Makes no sense. Same with nose-rings.

Like putting bumper stickers on a Ferrari

A tattoo is thought bubble fixed in time. A tweet you cannot erase even as you move on.

I dislike it when people just add pictures on to their skin. There's a kind of aesthetic of the human figure that it tends to disrupts. I do enjoy the tattoos of "tribal cultures". I think they manage to decorate the body with intricate patterns while also emphasising its forms.
