High-functioning families use communication & self-control to avoid & resolve conflict. But drama requires conflict, & long-form TV family drama requires sustained conflict. Antinatal side-effect: young TV-watchers expect kids & teens to be harder to raise than most really are.https://twitter.com/reason/status/1057304125489143809 …

The Haunting of Hill House is a richly layered domestic drama disguised as a gross-out ghost story. It's a perfect Halloween binge-watch. http://bit.ly/2AAnjKa

I thought it was decades of hearing the boomers telling us how having kids ruined their lives and feminism telling women that having children is oppression that created that effect.

Americans watch an average of 5 hours of TV a day -- a little more than we spend listening to boomers or feminists?? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_consumption …

Well said and when you grow up watching that it makes you fear having children because it makes it seem like it's impossibly hard, miserable and unrewarding when it could not be further from the truth.

Also tv glorifies disagreeable smart-alec kids who create drama, which real life kids imitate at home and among peers. Well behaved agreeable kids who aren’t trained in this have no hope in social status competition with those “schooled” by teams of clever tv writers.

It's crazy how much easier raising a toddler on a low academic income really is compared to what TV says it is.

You must not have mental hillness in your family. The first episodes are a good exemple of the feeling of powerlessness, of how good will and communication don't work with some mentally ill people

It looks like most of the comments about how easy it is to have children come from men. Interesting.

But sometimes parenting is really hard. Pretending that is not true makes things worse, especially for women who are usually the ones home with small children (and always the ones who actually have them).

Could you point me to the lit on how to do this communication that avoids and solves conflict? I'm in drastic need of those skills

Very true. They might be right though, if they try to parent others in the same way they parent themselves through early to mid adulthood.
