Why am I not commenting on the Brazilian election? Because I know nothing about Brazilian politics. That should be a good enough reason.

You could develop a sufficient opinion by reading, oh, say a single story about the man. If you can still shine a light between him and the description "aspiring totalitarian dictator" after that, well, more power to ya.

Your comment seems incredibly patronizing to the citizens of Brazil, as if they can't be bothered to read a single story about who they're voting for?

as a Brazilian, thank you. tired of correcting people online that think Hitler just resurrected and won the Brazilian election, just because they read it in an article on some left-biased newspaper.

my take on it, as someone who voted for the guy that won: for the last 16 years, the Worker's Party raped the country through failed socialist policies and systemic corruption on all levels - think hundreds of billions of dollars, and more to come (still investigating).

Brazil is a predominantly conservative country, but never had proper representation as such in the last several decades, because of the stigma that the Military Regime left behind.

So now, after several decades, Brazil had a truly conservative movement that promises to revert the country back to good old capitalism, crackdown on crime (the previous government implemented some absolutely crazy progressive policies that only increased crime) and corruption.

People (and the market) are specially hopeful because Paulo Guedes (a world-renowed economist) wants to implement a more liberal economy with lower taxes, a smaller government (so sorry, no nazism) and focus on individual freedoms instead of collectivism.

Brazil is deep in an economic crisis - currently #153 in the Heritage 2018 Index of Economic Freedom of 180 (US is #18) so the promise of free enterprise is warming up the markets already post-election and we can expect a lot of new jobs and foreign investment coming in.

The party that lost the election was behind behind all the corruption scandals - some say is the biggest corruption scandal in the history of the planet. It's no accident that they lost the election.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jun/01/brazil-operation-car-wash-is-this-the-biggest-corruption-scandal-in-history …

Yesterday's victory, I hope, marks another historical landmark: yet another country tried socialism and crumbled, and hopefully, is now on its way to recovery, to become all that it can be, for the good of all.
