Are there any taboo ideas or subcultures that you avoid learning more about, because you're worried that you might end up agreeing with them, and then you might be socially ostracized?

Yes, and they're all on the right. Nobody gets ostracized for believing that the workers should own the means of production. It doesn't mean that there's only one possible conclusion to take from things but there are all sorts of right-wing facts that it's best not to know about.

I'll let people guess what those things are. In the meantime, I'm going to make a conscious effort to forget knowing these things like they do at the end of 1998's Sphere.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHaYFvh7jiE …

        Interesting example of epistemic self-handicapping....

Nudist tribes/colonies intrigue me, even though I wouldn't join one. The concept of how quickly societally taboo things (like being nude in a non sexual way) can be normalized, when everyone else around you is doing the same, is fascinating to me.

Doesn't everyone want to learn everything, like pacman munching knowledge points? Also any idea that has traction (even terrible ones like communism) have to have an element of truth to them, otherwise they wouldn't be appealing & gain power. Filtering out that element is the joy

Randian objectivism. I already have trouble being empathetic and "reasonable" by societal standards. If someone were to make a decent argument as to why my obsession with aesthetic and self should be paramount, I worry about losing the ties that bind me to others.

For me, it's more about not wanting to talking about them; that which is not taboo in academia may still be seen as very taboo to people outside of academia. E.g. There are many topics in Evo Psych that are fascinating to me but I wouldn't mention them IRL

Really good question, and thread. Fear of being socially ostracized, IMHO, is the fundamental cause of the weaknesses in our society. In a healthy society political correctness, and its monstrous mutations, would have been stood up to, and never would have gotten traction.
