Bear in mind, the more important question is usually 'What stops the government from selling lobbyist/donor/special interest X the ability to reduce the reach of group Y?'

Why is it more important if the gov't does it? At this point, if Twitter, Facebook, and Google do it, it seems at least as distorting, if not moreso.

Gov't can enforce its exclusions with guns.

Yes. The government has a legal monopoly on lethal force. And the social media platforms control the code that runs their platforms. That seems much more relevant in this case. What am I missing?

The government's unique value is in the ability to hand out monopolistic power: Regulations, laws build moats that primarily protect incumbents and hurt challengers. It follows that self-interested parties will seek favor by the State. It's the nature of the beast.

I asked this earlier. Why do we expect a digital arena to be more democratic than its brick and mortar counterpart. The fact is you can subvert the other with greater ease than a monopolistic brick and mortar field. Geoffrey is right though. But infancy of platform is to blame

We can’t expect a democratic flattening from a technological hierarchical framework so early in its infancy. Especially when a necessary oligopoly started it. I hate saying that btw. How else could this digital era emerge? Railroads, highways. Only This time private sector led.

Contemplate this. Where Do most voices and companies have a presence? MSM, W town square or digital. Of the three, the last is the least oppressive/repressive.

It would seem from available information that there is very little difference between the public and the private sector and perhaps we could throw in intellectuals and artists as well...lets call it the Intelligencia...
