What stops a social media company from selling person X the ability to reduce the reach of person Y?

If the data refineries win, we may never find out.

I assume Chinese firms will eventually hack the American firms' records and reveal what colossal hypocrites they were about free speech.
-
Or a Manning/Snowden will emerge from the private sector and dump the keys to the kingdom. When that happens (all things do on a long enough timeline) for a major network, the new wikileaks, will run queries, not serve data.
-
And never forget incompetence
-
I have also wondered if there would ever be a firesale of Bebo or MySpace or equivalent data, posts, archives. At the stage when there is nothing left to sell...

Google owning so much of the advertising market on the Internet *and* search is a catastrophe for access to political figures and organizations. It'd be one thing if Google controlled search but not ads - or ads but not search. But Google has nearly full access controls.

Troubling but murky. I try to critically examine claims ppl are white nationalists, as too many on Left are far too liberal in applying that label. But there's a diff btwn Guilt by Six Degrees of Association vs "apears on Daily Stormer podcasts" - & Faith Goldy's the latter
-
That is irrelevant to the issue.

Rebel Media founder fired her over it & her coverage of Unite The Right events, so he found it relevant. Not a stretch to suspect there may hv been egregious stuff on her sites &/or ads. I prefer companies not get into judging speech content, but this one's a tougher call imho

That way of thinking is exactly the type of thinking that *has* to be avoided. If she wants to advertise her horrible self to the world, she should be more than welcome to. Being in control of both most of Internet advertising *and* search almost completely erases people.

Part of the ambiguity is these companies straddle the line between community & publisher. Or if not publisher, some neutral conduit for info. As a community, FB can kick you out, because values. It’s also a large-scale GeoCities, where anyone can publish a webpage.

The next iteration of Instagram marketing will allow every single user to redeem something for posting an endorsement of a brand. This is being driven IG's e-commerce features, but just like Facebook's news feed, it will eventually fall victim to sabotage
-
Hence why the Instagram co-founders just resigned from Facebook and had a feud with Zuckerberg.
-
I think that's a pretty likely assumption haha
