My grandmothers didn’t need evidence-based, pronatalist policies to have a combined 14 kids, maybe we should learn something from them?

Yes we should learn from everyone who had big families, not just from policy wonks.
-
The typical western government is currently doing multiple things that are antinatalist, my view is they should stop doing those things first before passing affirmative pro-Natalist policies.

Has anybody ever felt encouraged by their teachers/profs/school counselors to have kids? I recall in my primary, secondary and 8 years of tertiary ed I never was encouraged to have kids. Sweden offers the most generous benefits for parents but native-born pop still plummeting.

Interesting fact: pro-natalism played important role in creation of Swedish welfare state. Increasing fertility (esp for middle class) used to sell welfare services to conservatives. Argument done by Myrdals (of later ”American Dilemma” fame). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis_in_the_Population_Question …

The native born Swedish fertility rate may have increased but it is still way below replacement level. Immigrants are the ones having kids. Net decrease despite incentives
-
I know TFR has been somewhat below 2 for all, and more for natives. Would also need to check completed cohort fertility. This is remarkably stable around 2 until mid-1970s overall, despite lower TFR. Consistent with delaying of childbirth.

Thank you for responding. My concern is the remarkable consistency is net decline in spite of overwhelming financial incentives

I think there was a big swing in reaction to teen pregnancies that created a drumbeat of “do NOT have babies till you’re older.” In reality, most people can swing it if they manage their expectations. No cashing out needed.

Anything that lessens the role of government interference with the family or family roles will improve the quality of the family. That doesn't cost anything.
