If you're not aware of your own virtue-signaling tactics, then, functionally, you're an NPC.

Anyone else find it disturbing that a meme ascribing unconsciousness to vast populations of people is spreading? Isn't that one of the steps along the way to committing mass murder?

Good virtue-signaling bro. Are you aware of it?

It’s nothing new. Remember sheeple? My concern about virtue signaling is where does ‘signaling’ end and sincere speech begin?

Not necessarily unless you are inconsistent about right wing PC. But yeah, you can virtue signal about virtue signaling. Like you can be proud of your humility.

Not completely, it’s more a matter of degree. I fully admit I do critical thinking virtue signaling from time to time. I find political tribe virtue signaling annoying though. Of course that can lead to anti-tribal virtue signaling if you aren’t careful, lol.

I prefer to say: If you are unaware of your own virtue-signaling tactics, of your mental inertia and your tendency to justify your laziness with empty excuses, then you are a very classic human being.

Bit of a grandiose proclamation. As Elephant in the Brain shows, our virtue signalling runs deep. Doesn't the process of maturation involve slowly sussing out these tactics more and more over time?

Can perfecting your inner-press secretary's narrative be mistaken for "sussing out" less than honorable tactics?

Sure! Also, as I think Hansen tries to point out, not all of our virtue signalling is "less than honorable."

I think it ALL might be "less than honorable," and not simply to be contrarian. Virtue signaling in the verbal or written form should always be considered suspect unless it's accompanied by a beneficent behavior or action. This seems to be the most parsimonious litmus test.

How can virtue signaling of which we're unaware be less than honorable? Imo, the honorable thing is to try to become aware of one's own virtue signaling over time and choose to keep it or discard it on a case by case basis. If you're not making any attempt to do so, then boo.

Also, I spelled Hanson wrong. Robin Hanson, the Elephant in the Brain. Sorry.
