I think it's because a lot of schools seem to push the idea that if you aren't going to a 4+ year university straight out of high school you are going to fail. So they see that in their parents, instead of being told there are many ways to lead a fulfilling life beyond college.

I believe working class parents push this idea about college. I came from a working class family. I don’t see them as failures because they didn’t go to college. I see them as the source of my work ethic, independence, and character.

IMHO They aren’t embarrassed. They just don’t want down-side risk from the association. They have enough down-side risk to manage. Experiencing gratitude is unlikely to be perceived as more valuable than unconscious bias could be detrimental.

While I ++agree w sentiment, at a meta level it is may be, as Sowell suspects, ‘embarrassment’ (or ‘shame’) that is prime cause of improvement. Honest q: why do modern westerners believe inciting shame is immoral? It seems a big diff w other cultures and previous western culture

Exactly. Trump makes them feel empowered but he really hates and loathes them. Remember that he hates Jeff sessions southern accent. . Dems respect this group and need to work harder to show it.
