Steelman; I think they distrust the idea that it is possible/actual, and not that it isn’t a good hypothetical system. But then the identity power politics fills this vacuum to suggest “meritocracy” is ideology/justification for white male privilege & systemic refusal to share.

You don’t have meritocracy if childhood education is a massively uneven playing field - you have the kids born on third base crossing home plate and kids born down in the count striking out - nothing fair, in a vacuum, about that “competition”

If I need a plumber, I will call a plumber as opposed to a dentist. The purpose of meritocracy is to allow me to choose the best suited individual for the job. Nothing else. I don't look at their background when making the choice.
