In both of these series he has a blonde Republican alpha as hero and they are rumoured (by him) to be autobiographical.

Sorkin's Republican characters mostly serve as vehicles for him to bash the base of the Republican party. The Republican protagonists are routinely painted as "the only sane ones left". They are basically fictional McCains.
