A sociology professor explains why they demand that everyone believes the 'Noble Lie' that talent isn't heritable. Feelings more important than facts.https://twitter.com/shamuskhan/status/1046371146164244480 …

Thread on my thoughts re: elites: I think elite schooling can help develop real talents in people. But here’s the thing: the idea that those talents are “inherent” vs “cultivated as a result of investments” is where I take serious issue. The consequences are really important

I wonder who you think doesn’t believe this. I was at a picnic with a bunch of leftist radical lesbians last weekend and one of them talked to me about the sperm donor’s math ability in the context of her kid.

Almost no child of a great writer became a great writer himself. This goes for all arts - where talent, experience, and personality are closely interwoven. True genius, not just the quite ubiquitous “talent”, you cannot predict, measure, or inherit. It only shows through results.

As opposed to the Ignoble Lie that we currently have a system that efficiently targets investments towards the most talented?

It's embarrassing! The amount of 'talent' I've (not) seen 'tapped', as a direct result of 'poor' investment?! This guy mustn't get out much!

What good is an inherent gift for anything if someone has no resources to pursue it? Nobody gets where they are without help. It’s impossible to succeed in a vacuum. Maybe I missed something but I really don’t think that’s what he was getting at.
