Some folks genuinely believe in God, an immortal soul, and an afterlife. Swearing something to God, on pain of eternal damnation, is a very, very serious thing to them. Few atheists understand this.pic.twitter.com/cB5GX9wbbA

Incredibly simplistic. I am surprised an evo psych prof would say this. I loved your books BTW, but you cant seriously believe that people don't find a way to rationalize stuff that they want to do anyway and religion gives them plenty of wiggle room to rationalize.
Sounds like we need some data on this issue. I'm just betting that deeply religious people are somewhat less likely to be lying when they 'swear to God' than atheists are, controlling for other relevant variables.
Oh, but I did get that. I just wanted to add the perspective of the atheist. This is also relevant, esp. given how many people's actual, present, real, earthly lives are affected by others entertaining these particular beliefs.
Does any theist fully consider how their faith in a dear and absurd belief may negatively impact non-believers? (E.g. stem cell research bans)
Bit more complicated- Rudolf Hoss the commandant of Aushwitz received last rights to avoid an eternity of beat downs like the ones he was getting in prison. He could not in fullness be contrite because while he knew what he had done was wrong he had no feeling for it.
