Some folks genuinely believe in God, an immortal soul, and an afterlife. Swearing something to God, on pain of eternal damnation, is a very, very serious thing to them. Atheists find this absurd, as there is not a thread of evidence for it. Few religious people understand this.

Given that most atheists seem to consider themselves quite intellectual it’s odd that they never learn that mocking people for believing this is almost universally a terrible strategy for achieving anything positive.

I agree. However, to be fair, some "swear to God" so flippantly and dishonestly that the severity of the pledge has been lost, almost entirely.

I think quite a few atheists understand this given that, at least in the west, many many of them were believers before. I think the problem anyone has with this sort of thing is more on the grounds that anyone can do it and doesn't deter say a Catholic priest from causing harm.

"Few atheists understand...." [insert basic fact about being religious]. As an atheist who's hung out with organized atheists, that's my observation.
