Everybody almost died in global thermonuclear war on Sept 26 1983. This lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces kept a false alarm from escalating into a Russian retaliatory attack that could have unleashed hell on Earth. Kudos to @FLIxrisk for celebrating him.https://twitter.com/tegmark/status/1044950327332667392 …

I'm excited that we were able to give a $50k award to the family of Stanislav #Petrov, thanks to whom today isn't the 35 aniversary of WWIII. https://futureoflife.org/2018/09/26/50000-award-to-stanislav-petrov-for-helping-avert-wwiii-but-us-denies-visa/?cn-reloaded=1 … pic.twitter.com/TNfK0JpQVU

Tegmark, in Life 3.0, mentioned both near-misses avoided by human "inefficiencies" in Soviet defense capabilities that will certainly be streamlined to guarantee our demise when AI optimizes defense. Does FLI have a plan to re-boot a sane civilization following a CME?

The fear of dying horribly in a nuclear war with just 4 minutes’ warning kept me awake at night in the 1980s. I hadn’t realised how close we actually got.

We’re living in one of the improbable timelines where it didn’t happen, per quantum immortality. This partly explains why things are so fcking weird. In all sensible realities, we’re all dead. The 20th century was a reality-evolutionary bottleneck.

The Russian submarine commander Vasili Arkhipov should also get credit for preventing an all out nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
