London is just horrifying to drive/ride in, unless one uses public transport. I bet the fatality rate is vastly higher at motorway speeds than on surface roads though. Couldn't find good data on that though.

It requires a different value system and lifestyle. I'd rather be dead than never ride again.

It's not so much the dying that scared me. It's the spinal cord injuries...

Hoping self driving cars one day make it safer

Good point. Hard to imagine being comfortable on a self-driving motorcycle though...

I can’t tell you how many miles I have on motorcycles but I can tell you that I’ve seen amazing things, met great people, and have experienced much more of life than I would have otherwise. Never thought of it as bravery but as a means to live a little more.

In the 80s, big motorcycles became available in China. A Chinese friend and all of his buddies bought them. Today, he's the only one who is still alive.

My brother-in-law is a past motorcross champion. First time I visited he and my sister I was certain he was going to have a street bike. Not so. When I asked him why: “I only ride in situations where automobiles are not a factor.… Especially in oncoming traffic.“
