We'd never make your pay for seats, Geoffrey. If you chose not to select a seat our team will be happy to assist you at the airport.
-
You're missing my point. If one doesn't pay extra to select a specific seat ahead of time on
@AmericanAir, and waits for the airline to assign one at the airport, one usually ends up in the worst possible seat, e.g. a middle-of-the row seat at the back of the airplane.

Was this a Basic Economy fare?
-
Virtually all economy fares work this way now, and have done for a couple of years. Academics can't get reimbursed for anything above economy class when traveling to conferences.

Does it matter?
-
It means you can't do a fair comparison of ticket prices, for a start. The seat reservation charge is a hidden surcharge that can't be predicted in advance.

I just don't pay for the upgrade. Feels annoying because they're trying to complete on bottom-line price and then worsening every other factor, though.
-
I'm not talking about upgrades. I'm talking about getting any basic economy class seat reserved before day of travel.
