Whatever the stated reasons, Amazon has become the behemoth that it is by being ruthlessly effective at business. Any decisions to discontinue products were based on bottom line considerations.
I doubt that these digital book-burnings are driven by Amazon's profitability considerations. Many employees within companies like to virtue-signal to their peers, by imposing their political will on the company's operations, without any concern for shareholders.

I can't imagine Amazon would be as succesful as it is if it allowed such performative sanctimony of its senior employees to take precedence over the bottom line.
