If you want to understand the world, work in science. If you want to do good in the world, work in Effective Altruism. Or tech. If you want to pretend to do good for the social approval of others, work in 'social justice'.

Do you see any place for the humanities, arts and social sciences? Just reading Nussbaum’s book ‘Not for Profit’ about the role of humanities education in sustaining productive and responsible citizenship. She is avowedly progressive but has much to say of interest.
They're all important, especially in a classical liberal education. But they're not the most accurate way to understand the world or the most effective way to do good.

What is most effective depends on personality and circumstance. I wouldn’t want to live in a world where no-one did art for fear it wasn’t effective enough. More to the point, for some people art is the best contribution to the world even if the benefits are hard to quantify.
