In my bio class I teach greater male variability. I actually use it as a way to discuss reactions to certain findings (males at upper & lower ranges of IQ). Entirely non-controversial.

Exactly. That's the selection pressure for greater male risk-seeking in development, which results in greater phenotypic variability, IMHO.
