Apple might not be the right comparison, though Stanford was founded like this. A wealthy industrialist donating money and land to create a great university. Brandeis University was also founded with a specific goal and fundraising. So the template is there.

Just like cable could never pose a threat to network television, and digital streaming (eg Youtube and Netflix) could never pose a threat to cable. It's not as though one could now interact with a professor in New Mexico and another in Ontario from one's office in Los Angeles.
