Help me settle an argument. Is chess a 'board game'? Like, if someone says, 'Let's play a board game', and you get out a chess set?

I'd say yes but it's iconic enough that you don't usually lump it in with stuff like Monopoly or Shoots and Ladders, but if I was looking for a chess set, I'd look where board games are sold.

‘Let’s play a board game’ usually means ‘let’s pass several hours running a simple algorithm which doesn’t require the players to think strategically and instead just gives a little structure to an afternoon of hanging out.’ Chess is about crushing your opponent at any cost.
