But is it doing anybody a favor to accept them into a program if their likelihood of career success is very low? This applies to everybody from any background, privileged or not.

If only tenure counts as "success", 20% is a very poor outcome. But that's a pretty narrow definition.

Right, isn't the employment rate among PhDs very low? Most may not get tenure but most seem to get high skill jobs that use their education well.
