But is it doing anybody a favor to accept them into a program if their likelihood of career success is very low? This applies to everybody from any background, privileged or not.
My worry is not that the bottom 20% won't get jobs. It's that only the top 20% will ever get tenure, at best. And if we can't predict who will succeed, is it ethical to pretend like we can by admitting them? Such a tricky issue.

If only tenure counts as "success", 20% is a very poor outcome. But that's a pretty narrow definition.

Right, isn't the employment rate among PhDs very low? Most may not get tenure but most seem to get high skill jobs that use their education well.
