I actually think a lot of Motte&Baileys are unconscious. They belong to the same conceptual category for some people. Like, "women and men are different" literally means "women are inferior to men" for some people. What these people need is System 2 actually operating.

It's really amazing how often I catch people doing Motte-and-Bailey or Strawman, both of which are arguably opposite sides of the same Shell Game/Three-Card Monte logical fallacy. (The only difference is whose argument they're misstating.)
