If everybody could learn the difference between a motte and a bailey, Twitter discussions would get about 30% better overnight. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Motte_and_bailey …pic.twitter.com/VZR7Jirwff

@slatestarcodex : " ... maybe we can just call the whole thing 'strategic equivocation', which is perfectly clear without the digression into feudal fortifications." Let's be honest: everybody's here for that fleeting digression into the idea of feudal fortifications.

Strong and weak versions of a hypothesis sound like a typical case for this. For example, young Earth creationists switching to defense of intelligent design creationism.

I sympathize. It's not the most intuitively memorable metaphor.

I actually think a lot of Motte&Baileys are unconscious. They belong to the same conceptual category for some people. Like, "women and men are different" literally means "women are inferior to men" for some people. What these people need is System 2 actually operating.

It's really amazing how often I catch people doing Motte-and-Bailey or Strawman, both of which are arguably opposite sides of the same Shell Game/Three-Card Monte logical fallacy. (The only difference is whose argument they're misstating.)
