Many men can and do choose to reject this form of masculinity and follow other, more positive and less dangerous forms of masculinity.

The vast majority of men don't commit sexual felonies or murders. Labelling those who do as suffering from 'toxic masculinity' is an obvious attempt to demonize all masculinity and all men, and we can see right through it.

Again no one is saying that all men ascribe to this form of masculinity. Just that it is a pervasive form of masculinity that necessitates violence to maintain masculinity. Many men ascribe to different, nonviolent, nontoxic forms of masculinity. Masculinity =/= men.

If a person’s conception of their own masculinity relies on the dominance and subjugation of others, particularly women, and sexual conquest, or not expressing the full range of human emotion (ie crying being “unmanly”) that’s a type of toxic masculinity.

There are certain masculine traits you'd like to see become more common and others less common. How does it help you scientifically, as an anthro/bio person, to call the second 'toxic'? Sounds like shameless moralizing rather than objective science.

The debate over cultural relativism vs. human rights rages on. My personal morals lie on the side of minimizing harm to people. And many men in our culture have identified this type of masculinity as toxic to themselves, linked to high rates of depression and suicide.

Additionally “toxic masculinity” isn’t my wording or concept, it’s an already existent concept in social sciences. But I think it’s apt, it is referring to a masculinity that actively harms a population’s health and functioning.

Yes, I know the social sciences are full of terms that pretend to be objective, but that include strongly moralizing judgments based on activist agendas. I just don't think it's a good way to do research, and it's not fooling anyone who doesn't share the specific agenda.

Well we can debate the social sciences another time, but I do think it’s important to note that by clarifying the concept “toxic masculinity” we’ve shifted from your assertion that the original comment was about men to a discussion of specific types of behaviors and beliefs.

I'd just implore you to think: if male social scientists took traits that many women considered virtuous, and analyzed only the worse side-effects of those virtues, and called them 'toxic femininity', wouldn't you consider that anti-female stereotyping and bad science? Peace out.

Geoffrey's assertion that it's bad to take something bad, only analyze the bad, and then declare it is bad is indeed common sense. But sometimes sense is so common as to be devoid of meaning.

Depends on the argument and evidence. If certain behaviors associated with maintaining and defining feminist were causing harm to others or themselves, then that certainly could also be labeled toxic. Given the variation in gender ideology over time and space, it’s possible.

Not sure why I would consider it anti-female since again feminity =/= women’s masculinity =/= men. Not sure how I could call it bad science if I haven’t seen the evidence. Well I hope I have helped clarify the concept of toxic masculinity for you! Best wishes for your research.

I always like it when men read something and think it’s talking about them, then go on a rant. Telling. Quite telling. ☺️
