Never purge your library & throw away your books. Your kids & grandkids might want to read some of them. Every underline their little eyes see, every page they enjoy, will make them feel more connected to you, more grounded in the past, & more grateful for their family.
PS If you think your Kindle libraries and highlights will still be available to your grandkids in 50 years, ask where your digital photos are from 10 years ago.
My 10-year-old digital pics are safe on my network drive and Google drive, but my 15+-year-old film pics are stuck in an album I can't do anything with. The best way to preserve them would be scanning the negatives but those scratch so easily and special equipment is required.
I’ve made it a point to display my library in my house so my 6 yr old sees it. One day when he’s older I hope he gets curious and picks up Dostoyevsky and starts in on it. The hard drive on the desk with ebooks stored does little to spark curiosity in my opinion.

The beauty of today’s digital conservation is that it allows us the re-discovery of some old images of our grand-parents when they were on their 30’ (diaporamas) and that we can see, as grandkids, our own parents at 3yo, naked, just like our future grandchild will see us one day!

I actually have all my digital photos from 2005 indexed by date. What's fun is that I also have a script that shows me what I did on this day, in every previous year (if there are photos, of course). But I get your point about books.
Every single digital photo I have ever taken in my entire life is in my Dropbox and gets backed up monthly to 2 4TB hard drives.
Plus movies, plus music, plus eBooks.
Seeing a lot of people getting defensive about the photos comment. How many people are going to say to their kids - here, open this cloud drive and look at the tens of thousands of photos I took with my iPhone between 08-15? How many would be willing to let them look?
