Got a lot of thoughtful responses to my tweet against anonymity. I sympathize with many of those who disagree. Still think that self-restraint is essential to social media and anonymity degrades that self-restraint.

In my experience, about 80% of trolls are anonymous accounts, and they often have over 20k tweets and fewer than 500 followers. What could motivate a person to allocate their time in this way?

I'm not a troll, but I value anonymity because it allows me to have thoughtful discussions where I can Express myself and explore ideas without the fear of it impacting my career. I'd guess trolls are anonymous for similar reasons.

I think there's a sharp divide between anonymous trolls (sadistic idiots with nothing better to do than troll) and thoughtful people with heterodox views who use the cloak of anonymity to protect themselves from blowback. I always block the former & try never to block the latter.
