The debate over immigration is often reported as dominated by two positions: open borders and closed borders. There’s just one thing: No one serious in this area has ever held either one. What does that tell us? I’m not sure. But whatever it is, it’s critically important.

A lot of serious libertarians advocate totally free reproduction. But then if you ask whether they'd be happy with an extra 320 million kids born in the US in the next decade, they say 'but that would never happen', as if they know it would be a disaster if it did. Interesting.

To get 320m immigrants in one decade, you only need 4.5% of non-Americans to move here. To get 320m new kids, you'd need each of 60m fertile American adult woman to have about 5 kids in 10 years. The first seems a little more likely.

Usually those libertarians ok with open borders are also strong property rights individuals big into HOA and other contracts allowing private restrictions. Of course this usually follows the "you need to remove welfare first" counter. That's the standard back-forth I've seen

Yeah. Trouble is, it's a hell of a lot easier to open borders than to dismantle the welfare state.

Tell that to the Cato Institute, the leading libertarian think tank: https://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/forget-wall-already-its-time-us-have-open-borders …

Open borders are literally part of the 2018 Libertarian Party platform: 'Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders.' https://www.lp.org/platform/

Can you truly have (and enforce) private property rights and rule of law with open borders? Would crossing border mean instant citizenship, and all rights and responsibilities? If not, then what is person’s status vis-a-vis the respective sovereign country?

Those people aren't libertarians. They're anarchists.
