Musing about @primalpoly's post (& related, @sknthla's generation archetypes).
So common to read "I used to be Liberal, grew into Conservative".
In text, seems non-existent the other way around.
BUT in personal experience, ageing, softening bigot/doctrinaire familiar to us all.
I have a confusing patchwork of views, harder on some issues, softer on others, and it's a very different patchwork than a decade ago. Once you get used to changing your mind about things, it's not so bad.

Mostly it was a matter of reprioritizing what seems important based on new evidence about costs, benefits, and risks. And broadening the 'moral circle', in Peter Singer's terms.
