Most things I learn feel like they add to my knowledge base, but don't upgrade my thinking. The two things I've read that felt like they actually upgraded my thinking were the Lesswrong sequences, and Gödel, Escher, Bach. What are some things in that category for you?

I've read most of the Culture novels. How did they upgrade your thinking?

They point to a future that seems relatively clear-headed if optimistic. Previous sci-fi is so loyal to simplistic romanticism it has little to say about the present and naught of the future.
