It just amuses me to imagine politicians being held accountable for their accounting. One can dream.
We need a new social norm that if a politician claims to have a great new budget idea, they share their Excel spreadsheet so everyone can have a good hard look at it. And by 'everyone', I mean forensic accountants. You know, the ones trained to detect fraud.

Bernie did this and it seemed to help him garner support on his campaign quite a bit. However, it’s worth pointing out that this locks politicians in a unfeasibly tight box, especially for congresspeople, because budget reforms depend on so many people to get through

It’s plenty risky for a presidential candidate to make such specific promises, but the risk goes up when there are 534 other people trying to compromise with & fight you on every point. There are many ways to skin a cat- I just need to know a cat’s being skinned instead of a dog

Sort of. But the CBO does not consolidate Treasury and Fed spread sheets, like the Fed itself does. So, CBO treats Treasury as just another currency user rather than currency issuer.
