Instruction can be effective without being fun

I had a math teacher whose special vocation was repairing poorly built math houses. Kids will pick outrageous options on math word problems because so few have walked to market and bought 1 pound of bacon and 2 ounces of butter. It is a primal language that begins with "feels"

Very very important. Not everyone can become an expert in college-level math but most people can become proficient in algebra and calculus through practice.

This is like suggesting the War on Drugs fails because of a lack of effort; or that we lost in Vietnam because we didn't drop enough bombs. "Just get them to do it!" is an education practice that has been demonstrably failing most students since forever.

Really? I very strongly ascribe my success in school to all the learning computer games (eg the Jump Start series) I had a a kid. School was fun and with those supports never too hard, so I was always enthused to keep engaging.
