All good spaces have been claimed already. Either they go to some barren wasteland and starve to death, or they go to some valuable land that other people want too and we end up with another Israel/Palestine situation.
Are you familiar with the history of Mormons and why they settled in the middle of Utah? They did pretty well with barren wasteland.

Not really, but they sound a bit like the Mennonites in my country. But even Mennonites and Mormons can't colonize Chaco/Utah again, because the Mennonites and the Mormons are already there. They'd have to pick an even worse place. What could be a decent place nowadays?
