I'm pretty skeptical about the idea of life-history calibration through environmental cues of expected longevity. It's theoretically plausible, but the behavior genetics results don't usually support it. Longer discussion needed....

Geoffrey definitely doesn't share Sam Harris's (
@SamHarrisOrg) intuition that personal beliefs are the primary movers and shakes of these kinds of behavior. Would have been fun to hear them go into this difference of opinion. -
I think belief systems play virtually no role in petty crime or impulsive violence. They play a huge role in terrorism and state violence.

Imagine 2 neighborhoods where one had a high probability of catching and punishing violent offenders and other had a very low probability. Two individuals w/ same DNA might discover it is rational to behave violently in one place and irrational in the other. What is root cause?

I suspect that (1) likelihood of being caught, (2) speed of being caught, and (3) likelihood of being convicted are much more important than (4) severity of punishment/length of jail term. But I also suspect that few criminals have even the vaguest idea of these numbers.
