Elites don't remain elites if they don't exercise control through Overton window management (ideology) and/or credible threats of violence (military).
The double standards make it obvious: 'hate speech' that threatens the Overton window is punished much more harshly than 'hate speech' that threatens actual people.

My understanding is that Overton originally described his window along an axis of "more free" and "less free". But the window he described operates on many different axes at once, and the axis of freedom was a nice ambiguous one for Overton to choose in explaining the window.
