I suspect that's true of almost all racism throughout history. It's driven mostly by status-seeking and virtue-signaling within the racist culture, with actual animus against outsiders a secondary influence.

What is being described may just be a variant of the standard uber achievers dilemma. It may be a weird way to assimilate but I think it's a lot less. In NYC Korean-Jewish unions are common. I don't agree that taking on racist baggage works, outside the Times anyway.
