I’ve also found this to be true when looking at promotional posters for airline travel from the 50s and of course magazine art like the covers of the Saturday Evening Post.

Because this was exactly the kind of facile schlock that ab ex artists wanted to get away from. There's a difference between illustration to sell a product and fine art pushing boundaries of painting.
