Because this was exactly the kind of facile schlock that ab ex artists wanted to get away from. There's a difference between illustration to sell a product and fine art pushing boundaries of painting.

I read somewhere it was the case that Norman Rockwell was not really appreciated as an artist by his contemporaries for this reason.

I like how they include bicycle thieves skulking off in the background...
