I wish that the NY journalists would just stop writing for a couple of weeks every summer, drive across America, and talk with some ordinary folks. Maybe even listen. Go to some ranges, sing in some churches, get to know their fellow citizens. Might help.

Maybe they're not staying somewhere long enough, bec. the ones I saw all have an 'anthropological/combat pay' flavor, like Margaret Mead studying chimps.

Many articles seemed fairly sympathetic to me, with a real attempt made to understand their perspective. I don't think the NYT need to fully embed their journalists in small towns in Ohio and Mississippi to get an understanding of the "ordinary folks" there.
