Several crimes “legislate the truth”—fraud, perjury, obstruction, and false statements are examples. To the extent it’s covered by such laws, some science denialism (e.g., Philip Morris’s) is probably already criminal; it’s merely by convention that it isn’t prosecuted as such.

This really gets to the heart of what is wrong with politics. People really do want to force others to believe what they believe. This is why theocratic states have been so dominant in world history. Folks just have to see their morals reflected in the laws of the land.

What about holocaust denial? I think Campbell was making the point that climate change denial is a similar kettle of fish to the former, wherein actual, widely known facts dispute any bogus denials, and the bogus denials are often to cause harm.
