      If social desirability bias didn't have a big impact on responses to survey questions like this, maybe the pollsters would have predicted the 2016 election outcome?

      Their job wasn't to predict the popular vote. Their job was to predict who wins the election. The popular vote is totally irrelevant given how US elections work.

      That's exactly why social desirability bias probably wasn't the reason the prediction models failed.

      So why did all major news outlets and pollster websites make highly confident predictions about winners that proved highly incorrect? Why no epistemic humility?

          Dunno, probably had to do with cultural factors in the media. BUT, not about social desirability bias in poll response.

          Wasn't there a bias against Trump in important statewide polls? Could that not be social desirability bias? Or just response bias related to demographics of Obama-Trump voters?
