Can I say that it depends on the field? Tattoos tend to signalize e.g. individualism or boldness. When it is necessary deep collaboration and following strict protocols, against. When new ideas are the priority and there's no need for deep collaboration, for.

No, I would take their research more seriously. Becoming a scientist despite some discrimination from other scientists & administration because of their tattoos would suggest they may be much more competent than the average scientist.
